CLIENT: Casting Project
3D Hub has been developing a project for a specialised industrial product. The cap part has been designed to work in an aggressive environment and has to withstand localised impact.
The project’s design challenges meant we ended up designing a cap with an asymmetrical profile, forcing us to choose between CNC milling it from billet with difficult large under cuts or casting and finish machine. The decision of casting meant we needed to design a pattern, utilised our in-house 3D Printer to build the pattern and supply it to the foundry to meet the time deadline.
The cap was cast, fettled and CNC finish machined, resulting in a product that has now been used successfully in prototype testing.
